Supporting Fiber Optic Cable Installation
with Microtrenching

On-Demand Concrete is working to connect Colorado and beyond

Fiber Optic Cables are connecting our world together and ensuring people have access to lightning-fast resources — but the process behind making sure that every community has access to the best data networks often gets overlooked.

It takes manpower to make sure our communities are connected, and On-Demand Concrete is making sure its volumetric fleet is leading the way through a process called microtrenching.

WHAT IS MICROTRENCHING?

Microtrenching is an installation technique where a shallow trench is dug using specialized saws, usually on the side of the road, then filled with backfill material that provides support to a utility line.

For On-Demand Concrete, this usually means one of our volumetric concrete mixers is on site and depositing material into buggies, which then dump right into the street cut to cover the fiber with flowable fill, oftentimes in partnership with a leader in fiber optic cable installation like Mastec.

WHY USE MICROTRENCHING?

  • Fast and cost-effective: Because microtrenching requires a narrower and shallower trench, it requires less excavation time.
  • Preserves surface appearances: Microtrenching doesn’t require tearing up a large portion of the existing road or surface, meaning there is less disruption to roads and less restoration work required after the trench has been filled.
  • Multi-compatibility: In addition to fiber optic cables, microtrenching can be used to install other utility lines, including electrical lines and underground pipes.

If your community is installing fiber optic cables or your organization is looking to partner with a concrete provider that specializes in microtrenching, contact On-Demand Concrete today to learn more about our capabilities and other projects that suit your needs!
